Christmas 2024 - Holidays in a Historic Home

There’s no question - my favorite holiday is, without a doubt, Christmas. Despite the emotional baggage the holidays bring for me (and for many, I’m sure) - there’s just something about Bing Crosby, a needlepoint stocking, and the smell of pine that warms my soul in an indescribable way.

This was the Pink Lady’s 151st (!!) Christmas, and I love to think about what holidays through the years may have looked in this home. Who was here? What were there traditions? Where, pray tell, did they put their tree!?

Each year, I try not to peek at the previous year’s photos, in an effort to bolster my creativity and “shake things up” a bit. This is only our third year decorating, and it was fun to move things around.

This year, we kept our traditional tree in the family room, but moved the ROYGBIV tree into the playroom (it’s generally in the foyer.)

This was such a simple change, but made a huge difference; rather than having to move furniture around, only our small play kitchen was displaced and we opted to put the Dickens Village in the entry hall.

The only wrench thrown into our Christmas setup was the addition of our beloved kitten, Ruby - who turned the tree into her personal playground. Now accepting tips for preventing that for next year - ha!

Last year, we skipped our Dept 56 Dickens Village because I was recovering from knee surgery and it felt a little too daunting. Putting it out this year was bittersweet, but lovely. You can read more about the history of our village and my memories in this reel’s caption.

Tinsel, our beloved Elf on the Shelf, is making an appearance back there! This year, rather than using a dark green sheet and fake snow, I opted to paint a green street and add cotton snow above it. I think it worked out well!

We kept things relatively simple in the kitchen this year - adding a few poinsettias, faux wreaths, and blue ribbon to secure them. We also added new Bene Dining Stools from Sixpenny home - I couldn’t love them more!

I hope you all had a wonderful and safe Christmas full of love and time spent together!
